How to Turn Off the GPS Tracker of a Car?

GPS tracker is indeed an invaluable tool for keeping a check on your car's location. However, there might be situations where you want to turn off the GPS tracker in your car—like when you need to sell your car or simply want privacy.

Here’s a simple and clear guide to help you locate and disable a GPS tracker. All while ensuring that your car is free from unwanted tracking.

Locate The GPS

The first thing you need to do is locate the GPS tracker in your car. These tracking devices could be secretly hidden in your car and difficult to find.

Here are some common hiding spots:

Dashboard

GPS tracker can be hidden under the dashboard or connected to car’s OBD-II port. Carefully check beneath the dashboard, pay close attention to steering wheel and columns. Also illuminate dark corners with the help of flashlight. Look for unfamiliar wires that do not match with the car’s original wiring.

Trunk

The trunk is another area where you can find a GPS tracker. Start by examining area around the spare tire, remove the tire and cover panels to look for small boxes or devices, as trackers might be secured with tape or simply hidden. It is also suggested to check hidden compartments within the trunk, such as storage bins or side panels.

You should inspect the metal body and look for device attached to metal surfaces. If you find any suspicious devices take photo of them for further analysis.

Panels

Start by identifying any panels that can be easily removed, such as those covering the glove compartment, door panels, or center console. Use a screwdriver or any other appropriate tool to carefully remove these panels but take care not to damage them. After removing panels visually inspect the areas. Pay close attention to hidden compartments. Check both the interior and exterior sides of panels for any signs of tampering.

Undercarriage

GPS trackers are magnetically attached to the underside of the car so start by positioning yourself under the car and visually inspect the entire underside. Use a flashlight to check dark areas and look for any suspicious objects attached to the metal frame. Pay close attention to the wheel wells, frame rails, and any other accessible areas where a tracker could be securely attached or find. Look for small box-like devices that seems out of place compared to the surrounding components.

Disconnect the Power Source

Once you find a GPS tracker, the next thing you have to do is cut off its power source. You can inactive the power source by disconnecting it. You should have to know that whether it is connected directly to the car’s battery or has its own internal power source. After disconnecting power source double-check all connections to make sure that they’ve been properly served. You can take significant steps towards reclaiming control.

Use a GPS Jammer (Temporary Solution)

If you can't find the tracker or want a temporary solution, you could use a GPS jammer. This device sends out signals that block the GPS tracker from sending or receiving signals. However, be cautious as GPS jammers are illegal in many places and can interfere with other important communications.

Consult a Professional

If you’re unsure or can’t turn off the GPS tracker, consider consulting a professional. This is a smart move when you need expert advice or help with important matters. It is suggested to contact the GPS tracking solution providers as they can give you reliable advice that fit your specific situation. They have the tools and expertise to locate and disable hidden GPS trackers without damaging your vehicle.

Final Thoughts

Turning off a GPS tracker in your car is relatively straight forward if you know where to look. Remember, if the tracker was installed by someone else, such as a rental company or a manager, disabling it might violate agreements or laws. Always consider the legal implications before tampering with GPS devices.
